How to Protect Your Energy When Your Light Is Bright: Jealousy, Energy Vampires, Low-Vibration Partners and Soul Ties

October 21, 2026

Light attracts. It does not get to choose what.

When you do the work, when you heal, raise your vibration and start living in your own light, something happens that nobody warns you about. The people who need light the most begin to find you. Some of them want to be warmed by it. Some of them want to take it. From the outside, in the first weeks, they look exactly the same.

This is the article I wish someone had handed me the first time I became bright enough to be noticed. It covers what a high vibration actually is, the signs someone is jealous of you, how energy vampires operate, why your light attracts low-vibration partners, what a soul tie does to your energy, and exactly how to protect your energy without dimming it.

What a high vibration person actually is (and why you can't hide it)

Your vibration is the baseline quality of your energy: light or heavy, open or guarded, clear or foggy. A high vibration person is not someone who is always happy. It is someone whose energy is clean: they have released more than they carry, they mean what they say, and they don't need anything from the room they walk into.

Signs of a high vibration person: people relax or light up around you without knowing why; strangers tell you things; children and animals come to you; you can sit in silence with yourself; your "no" is calm; small good things land fully; and heaviness, when it comes, passes through rather than settling. Marcus Aurelius wrote the reason in his Meditations (5.16): "Such as are your habitual thoughts, such also will be the character of your mind; for the soul is dyed by the thoughts." Your inner life has a colour, and people can see it.

That visibility is the gift and the exposure. A bright field is felt by everyone, including people whose own field is empty.

Signs someone is jealous of you: 9 tells

Aristotle noticed something in the Rhetoric that still holds: we envy those near us, in age, place, status or reputation. Nobody envies a stranger's light. The jealousy that drains you comes from close range: the friend, the sibling, the colleague, the partner.

1. The compliment with a hook. "You're lucky things always work out for you." Praise that quietly removes your effort.

2. Flat reactions to your good news, then warmth when something goes wrong for you.

3. Copying, then competing. Your habits, your style, your words, reproduced and then used against you.

4. The small sabotage. Forgetting to pass on the message, being late to your moment, "joking" about you in front of others.

5. They need you smaller to feel fine. Any growth in you is treated as a problem to be managed.

6. Your wins become their story ("I told her to do that") and your losses become proof.

7. They probe for your weak spot and bring it up at the exact wrong time.

8. You feel tired, not after conflict, but after their praise.

9. Your body knows before your mind: chest tightness, a dropped stomach, the urge to shrink when they arrive.

Bertrand Russell called envy "one of the most potent causes of unhappiness": for the envious, not for you. Their envy is their pain. It only becomes yours when you accept the invitation to carry it.

Energy vampires: people who drain your light to fill their darkness

An energy vampire is not a monster. It is a person who has an emptiness they refuse to face and has discovered that your light fills it, temporarily. So they come back. Every tradition names them. The Greeks spoke of baskania, the envious eye. Mesopotamian clay tablets from five thousand years ago carry incantations against it. Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Caribbean and Latin cultures all developed the same amulet, the blue eye, for the same reason: humans have always known that looking at someone's light with envy does something to them.

In Haiti we say Sak vid pa kanpe: an empty sack cannot stand. A person who has not filled themselves will lean on whoever is standing straight. That is you.

How to recognise them: every conversation is about their crisis; you leave feeling emptied while they leave refreshed; they are allergic to your boundaries; they are charming when they need you and cold when you need them; your problems are always smaller than theirs; and you catch yourself managing their mood like weather. The simplest test: how do you feel one hour after seeing them? Lighter, or lighter in the wallet of your own energy?

Nietzsche's warning in Beyond Good and Evil (§146) is the whole caution in one line: "Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you." Trying to fix a person who drains you is how bright people go dark. You cannot pour yourself into an empty sack and expect it to stand.

Why your light attracts low-vibration partners

This is the part people least want to hear. Low vibrational people are not drawn to other low vibration people. They are drawn to light, because light is what they lack. When your field is bright, you become attractive to two kinds of partners at once: those who want to grow with you, and those who want to feed on you. Both will say the right things. Both will feel like "a connection" in the first month.

The difference shows up over time, in one place: after they have had access to you, do you have more energy or less? A partner who matches your vibration leaves you fuller than they found you. A partner who is feeding on it leaves you tired, doubting yourself, and oddly unable to leave.

That inability to leave is not weakness. It is the next section.

Soul ties and sexual energy exchange: why intimacy leaves a cord

A soul tie is the energetic bond formed between two people through deep emotional or physical intimacy. The idea is ancient and cross-cultural. The Hebrew scriptures describe Jonathan's soul as "knit with the soul of David" (1 Samuel 18:1). Paul wrote that the one who joins with another in the body becomes "one body" with them (1 Corinthians 6:16). Taoist tradition held that sexual energy, jing, is literally exchanged between partners. Tantra treats the union as a merging of fields, not just bodies.

None of these traditions were being prudish. They were observing the same thing I see in people's energy every week: intimacy leaves a cord. Through that cord, energy travels both ways, for as long as the cord exists, regardless of whether you still see the person. This is why you can be "over" someone and still think about them at 2 a.m. It is why a brief relationship with a heavy person can leave you heavy for a year. And it is why mindfulness about who you are intimate with is not moralism; it is energy hygiene.

Signs of a soul tie that is draining you: intrusive thoughts about a person you don't want; feeling their moods from a distance; dreams of them; a drop in your energy since the relationship; attracting the same type again; and a sense that part of you is still "over there."

How to break a soul tie: name it honestly ("I am still energetically tied to X"); remove gifts, photos and objects that hold the cord; stop the small re-contacts, the "just checking" message, the profile visit, because each one re-opens it; write the release in your own words and say it aloud; cleanse your field (below); and, for cords that don't move with the home version, have them cut. The thread that keeps pulling you back is not love, and it is not fate. It is a cord. Cords can be cut.

Protect the light. Cut the cords.

These are the sessions I use for exactly this, in the order most people need them:

Energetic Release ($29.99/month) cuts the cords left by past partners, ex-friends and the people who drained you, monthly, with a written report of what was attached and where. This is the one people feel first. Start Energetic Release →

Energy Protection Shield ($120) strengthens your aura so jealousy, envy and other people's heaviness slide off instead of soaking in. For empaths, this is not optional. Energy Protection Shield →

Evil Eye & Negative Energy Clearing ($120) removes what envy has already left on you: the heaviness that arrived right after good news, the run of bad luck, the exhaustion with no cause. Evil Eye Clearing →

Heavy Energy Lift ($120) if the drain has already dimmed you and you need your vibration brought back to your own baseline. Heavy Energy Lift →

Don't know which? The $65 Energy Check-Up reads your field, shows exactly who and what is attached, and the $65 is credited toward whichever session your report recommends. All remote, worldwide, with a personal written report.

How to protect your energy: 10 things to do (without dimming your light)

1. Decide the price of access to you. Not everyone who wants your time, your body or your attention has earned it. Access is earned by how someone treats you over time, not by how much they want you.

2. Run the one-hour test on every relationship. How do you feel sixty minutes after them? Keep the ones that leave you fuller. Limit the rest.

3. Stop explaining your light. People who are envious will ask you to justify your peace, your success, your calm. Don't. Explanations are energy, and they are using them as a straw.

4. Share wins selectively. Not everyone gets the news. The ones who go flat when you shine are telling you who they are. Believe them.

5. Shield before you enter. Before a draining room or person, picture a light around you that lets love in and lets everything else slide off. Old, simple, effective. More empath protection practices here.

6. Cleanse your energy weekly. Salt water bath or a handful of salt in the shower, windows open, a slow exhale longer than the inhale, and ten minutes alone with no screen. How to clear your space too.

7. Be mindful about intimacy. Before you let someone into your body or your deepest confidence, ask: would I want this person's energy in me for a year? Because that is the exchange.

8. Cut cords on a schedule, not when you're desperate. Hygiene, not emergency. Monthly is enough for most people.

9. Keep company that keeps you. Seneca advised, in his seventh letter, to associate with those who will improve you and to welcome those you can improve. Note what's missing: those who take.

10. Protect your peace as the asset it is. Peace is not the absence of people. It is the presence of the right ones, and the firm absence of the wrong ones.

You are not meant to go dark to be safe

The temptation after a few drains is to dim. Go quiet, share less, trust nobody, become smaller than the room. That is the abyss gazing back. The answer to people who want to take your light is not less light. It is better doors.

Marianne Williamson wrote that it is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. It frightens others too. Let it. The right people are not frightened. They are warmed. Build your life around them, cut the cords to the rest, and shine without apology.

Frequently asked questions

What is an energy vampire?
A person who, consciously or not, feeds on other people's energy to fill an emptiness they won't face. The test is simple: you consistently leave them drained while they leave refreshed.

What are the signs someone is jealous of you?
Hooked compliments, flat reactions to your good news, copying then competing, small sabotage, needing you smaller, and the fatigue you feel after their praise rather than after conflict.

What is a soul tie and how do you break it?
An energetic bond formed through intimacy, through which energy keeps moving both ways. You break it by naming it, removing its objects, stopping re-contact, speaking a release, cleansing your field and, for stubborn ties, having the cord cut in a session.

How do I cleanse my aura?
Salt (bath or shower), fresh air, breath with a long exhale, time alone off screens, and grounding with your feet on the earth. For energy that won't shift, a clearing session reads and removes what you can't see.

Can being too high-vibration attract the wrong people?
Bright light attracts everyone, including those who want to take it. The answer is not to be less bright. It is to be more discerning about access.

Is it wrong to cut people off to protect my energy?
Limiting access is not cruelty; it is stewardship of the one thing you are responsible for. You can wish someone well from a distance that keeps you whole.
