Simple self-care representing the move toward authentic low-effort self-care over performance

Why simple self care is replacing performative wellness

June 24, 2026

For years, wellness was something you did in public. It looked like carefully photographed morning routines, seventeen-step skincare rituals posted to social media, and the quiet implication that if your healing was not aesthetically pleasing, you were not doing it right.

Publications like Vogue began documenting a significant cultural shift: women increasingly exhausted by the pressure of performative wellness were quietly stepping back toward something far simpler, more private, and more genuinely restorative. Not because they had given up on caring for themselves — but because they had finally realised that caring for yourself and performing wellness for others are two entirely different things.

The Trap of Performative Wellness

Performative wellness is wellness that is designed, at least partly, to be seen. It is the version of self-care that requires validation to feel complete — that only counts if someone notices, comments, or approves. And it is exhausting in a very specific way because it adds the emotional labour of impression management to the already demanding work of actually trying to heal.

At Enlight Me Center, I Am Steanie often speaks about the difference between going through the motions of wellness and actually feeling well. The motions can be beautiful and still leave you completely empty. True self-care is not about how it looks. It is about whether it actually supports your emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing — consistently, without an audience.

What Simple Self-Care Actually Looks Like

Simple self-care is not dramatic. It does not require expensive products, a beautifully appointed bathroom, or an hour of uninterrupted time. It looks like going to bed when you are tired. Eating something nourishing when your body needs fuel. Stepping away from a conversation that is draining you before you give everything away. It looks like sitting in silence for five minutes without a phone in your hand. Saying no without a twelve-point justification. These things do not photograph well. They are also, genuinely, the things that heal you.

The Permission You Have Been Waiting For

If you have been waiting for permission to simplify, here it is: your self-care does not have to be impressive. It does not have to be consistent with what anyone else is doing. The only question that matters is whether what you are doing is actually making you feel more grounded, more rested, more like yourself. If it is, it is working. If it is not — no matter how impressive it looks — it is not.

Building a Practice That Is Truly Yours

The most sustainable self-care practice is one that fits naturally into your actual life — not a life you are performing or aspiring to. This requires self-knowledge: understanding what your body and emotional system actually need, as opposed to what wellness culture tells you you should need.

At Enlight Me Center, we help people build personalised approaches to wellbeing that are rooted in who they actually are, not in external standards of what healing should look like. Whether you are starting your self-care journey or rebuilding after burnout, our services and resources are designed to meet you exactly where you are.
