The difference between healing and avoiding pain
There is a version of healing that is really just a more sophisticated form of avoidance. It looks like healing. It uses the language of healing. It might even involve healing practices. But underneath it, the actual pain has never been touched — it has simply been rearranged, reframed, or built around.
Understanding the difference between genuine healing and emotional avoidance is one of the most important distinctions on any recovery journey. As Tiny Buddha has explored in depth, many people spend years in wellness practices without ever addressing the core emotional material that actually needs to move — not because they are lazy, but because real healing requires a level of surrender and discomfort that is genuinely difficult to face.
What Avoidance Looks Like in a Wellness Context
Avoidance in a healing context is subtle. It might look like staying relentlessly busy with growth activities so there is never quiet enough to feel what is underneath. Using meditation as a way to float above emotion rather than move through it. Intellectualising your trauma story with great sophistication while remaining emotionally disconnected from its impact. It might look like consuming healing content and attending workshops without ever being genuinely vulnerable with anyone who could hold that vulnerability safely. Or spiritualising everything — framing every painful experience immediately as a lesson, before the feeling has been fully honoured.
The Signs That You Are Healing, Not Avoiding
Genuine healing tends to feel tender. It involves moments of genuine vulnerability — of actually feeling the emotions you have been protecting yourself from. It produces change at the behavioural level, not just the intellectual one: you find yourself responding differently in situations that used to trigger old patterns. It makes you more present, not more detached. More embodied, not more ethereal. And it changes your relationship with yourself — you begin to trust yourself differently, know yourself more clearly.
Why We Choose Avoidance Over Healing
Avoidance is not weakness — it is intelligence. When pain was overwhelming or unsafe to feel in the past, learning to move away from it was adaptive. The problem is that these old protective strategies become obstacles when you are finally in a position to do deeper work. Your nervous system does not automatically know the difference between the unsafe environment of the past and the safe one you may be in now. It continues to apply the same old protection — until you consciously, gently, repeatedly choose to do something different.
Choosing Genuine Recovery
Moving from avoidance to genuine healing requires safety, support, and willingness. Safety — an environment and relationship in which it is truly okay to be honest and vulnerable. Support — someone who can hold the difficulty of your experience without flinching or trying to fix it away. And willingness — the decision to go toward the discomfort rather than perpetually managing it from a distance.
At Enlight Me Center, our healing work is designed to create exactly those conditions. I Am Steanie works with people who are ready to move beyond managing their pain and into genuine release. The work is real, it is sometimes difficult, and it genuinely changes lives.
